Have your say on the future of Moor Lane.
Moor Lane, in the city of London, is being reimagined - and we would like your input.
Who we are
To improve Moor Lane, the City of London Corporation has appointed:
Urban Movement - an urban design consultancy - to develop the design proposals for the street. They are supported by design team members Able Partners and, Civic
New Practice - a design and placemaking practice - to lead community engagement and gather feedback from people who use and know the area.
Why we need your input:
The purpose of the survey is to:
Understand the public’s priorities.
Fine-tune the vision statement and interpretation of design principles that underpin design ideas.
Explore what works well in the concept designs and what could be enhanced.
Surface perspectives, values, or opportunities that may not yet have been considered
Build a shared understanding that can support the next stage of work.
What has happened so far:
To date, we have engaged with a working group comprising Barbican residents and key stakeholders, which has helped shape the concept design proposals.
In collaboration with the working group, we have developed a list of design principles that underpin the project and shape design choices.
While these design principles are set, we welcome your thoughts on how they have been translated into the concept design. You will have an opportunity to do this in the survey.
Design Principles:
Prioritise street trees and lush planting where space allows, enhancing character, health and environmental benefits
Prioritise in-ground planting to maximise growth potential, support sustainable water management, soften noise and air pollution, and reduce maintenance needs
Where feasible, position new greenery in locations that enhance views from nearby residences, ensuring those living closest can directly benefit from the new planting
Create a pedestrian-priority street, designing out informal loading and servicing
Deliver a safer, more comfortable walking and cycling route by removing through-traffic and strictly enforcing access-only movements
Use sensitive, high-quality materials that respond to the character of the City of London and the Barbican, in line with the City of London Corporation guidance
Improve comfort and accessibility for all users while carefully managing potential for anti-social behaviour
Facilitate emergency vehicle and cycle access throughout.

This survey will likely uncover a wide variety of needs, wishes and aspirations for Moor Lane, and views on its future may differ. We will carefully consider all feedback alongside the project's vision and design principles to help balance these different perspectives and shape the next stage of design.
