Toryglen Community Hall
Feasibility study for the extension of a valued Toryglen community space, unlocking capacity for more events and wider community use
The Toryglen Community Hall is an essential facility for local events, meetings, and activities, but its current size and capacity are no longer sufficient to meet growing demand.
Established as a charity in 1988 and built in 1989 through local efforts, Toryglen Community Hall has served as a vital cultural and social hub for 35 years. Since its humble beginnings, the area of Toryglen has undergone significant transformation, including the near-total displacement of its original population and the development of new housing.
Despite these changes, the hall has consistently offered activities and groups that support community building and address social isolation. Managed by a dedicated committee of local volunteers, the hall continues to enhance residents’ quality of life, health, and well-being, fostering community cohesion throughout its evolution.
As Lead Architect, we worked closely with the client to shape a brief that responds directly to the needs of the community. We delivered a feasibility study exploring options for expanding the hall to better serve local users and to support larger, more frequent events. Building on this, we developed a concept design that introduces additional multi-purpose rooms, upgraded kitchen facilities, and improved accessibility throughout. The proposal prioritises flexibility and ease of use, creating a welcoming environment capable of hosting a wide range of activities and events.
The proposed extension seeks to build on Toryglen Community Hall’s existing aluminium façade by introducing colour and new materials to create a vibrant identity.
The extension will not only give the building a distinctive street presence but also create a welcoming, inclusive hub that enhances its role as a focal point for the neighbourhood.
By expanding the Toryglen Community Hall, the facility will be better equipped to serve the local community, offering increased capacity and improved functionality for a broader range of events.
